Canalside housing at Hidden Lock, Smethwick
Hidden Lock is the name of the road, as this estate is built on the route of Smethwick Old Locks, which were bypassed in 1790. The photographer is between the Bottom and Middle Smethwick Locks, on the 'bypass' route.

Birmingham Canal Navigations - lock Number 2 on the Old Main Line
The middle of 3 locks bringing the Old Main Line to the summit level through Smethwick. As built the canal had been at a higher level with 6 locks but three were removed. Telford's New Main Line is in a deep cutting through Smethwick without locks.

Birmingham Canal Navigations - Smethwick
Seen from the bridge over the entrance to the Engine Arm on the Old Main Line. This is the top lock, after the summit level was lowered by 3 locks. The burnt out 'toll house' is a modern octagonal pastiche (the original toll houses were quadrilateral).
