Rover plant, Longbridge in happier times
This has largely been swept away now. This was in the days of BMW ownership. Bottom left is a British Gas installation that was on the end of a high pressure pipeline from Birmingham. The tall chimney was on a combined heat and power plant with an aeroderivative gas turbine producing electricity and raising steam from the waste heat in the exhaust. Rover was proud of this plant. We had just been to see some of the infrastructure and had seen a 1930s boiler house with water tube boilers (derelict), a 1930s powerhouse with a 4 MW turbine (disused) and some beautiful big Belliss & Morcom motor driven compressors (in use), the CHP powerhouse and a mothballed boiler house with some brutal packaged boilers. Unfortunately there was a strict no photography policy that included derelict 1930s infrastructure.
