Lych Gate, Erdington
St Barnabas Church was built between 1822-23 to a design by Thomas Rickman. The church was famous for its sixteen stained glass windows depicting scenes of the life of Jesus and stories from the scriptures, including the Raising of Lazarus, The Resurrection, The Good Samaritan and St Paul and St Barnabas, which were also designed by Thomas Rickman. It was consecrated on July 23, 1824. In 1858, a district chapelry was assigned to the church.
On the morning of 4 October 2007, the building was severely damaged by fire. West Midlands Fire Service were called to a fire at the church at 6.00am. Approximately 75 firefighters and 15 engines attended the fire. The roof and all but one of the stained glass windows were completely destroyed, though the clock and bell tower and walls remained intact. The Rt Revd. David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham, stated he was determined to rebuild the church. It is believed that the fire was caused by arsonists.

Going for a Burton
On High Street, Erdington, opposite Church Road, the majestic frontage of former Burton tailoring store survives intact.
'Montague' Burton was born in Lithuania in 1885, and his stores were once the largest chain of tailoring stores in the world. He created a demob suit for WWII troops, known as 'The Full Monty', and the England World Cup winning team wore Burton suits.

This benchmark was established in 1851 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 411.361 feet [125.383 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Sheffield to Birmingham levelling line and appears on the 1889 OS map. The surveyor's description was "No. 258. Bolt in South face of St. Bartholomew's Church, Erdington ; 2.63 ft. above surface." (Public Abstract p.363). The mark is to the left of the steps.
