For several years previously the left-hand traffic lane on this stretch of the A647 had been branded a '2+ lane' at peak times, meaning it was only open to vehicles with at least two occupants, intended to encourage commuters to share cars. It was an abject failure, as without enforcement it was widely ignored and both lanes were equally congested in the rush hour. In 2022 the signage was changed, and cameras added to enforce what is now a full-time bus lane. It has the added advantage of allowing emergency vehicles speedy passage, as seen here.
