Very much Victorian in concept, it was not actually built until 1912-1915. Designed by the Gloucester-based architect Walter B Wood (1852–1926) for the Gloucester Church Extension Society and built by Gloucester firm James Byard & Sons. It was built at a central location for the parish to replace a church that had been built as recently as 1868, but in a less convenient location. This was demolished in 1921. St Catharine's is Listed Grade II. There is a benchmark http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6090296 on the apsidal chapel, just to the left of the large notice board.
