Hundreds of years before the Industrial Revolution, iron was being produced here at Coed-y-Brenin in small furnaces called 'bloomeries'. The two main ingredients used here were charcoal and iron ore. The charcoal was produced on site and the iron ore was imported from mines at the foot of the nearby Rhinog mountains. Source: Natural Resources Wales
