The Old Vicarage in Dereham was requisitioned during WW1 as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital for treating wounded soldiers when they were returned home. This image was taken with the kind permission of the owner to whom I am most grateful. The hospital opened on 16th November 1914 with up to 70 beds, by the time it closed on 5th April 1919 2067 patients had passed through its doors. At times when the vicarage was bursting at the seams tents were erected on the vicarage lawn.
