The building was designed for the Great Northern Railway by J.H.Taylor, a London architect, in "Baronial" style. It was completed in 1848, two years after the nearby Lincoln St Marks (Midland Railways) station. John Henry Taylor (1791/92-1867) was a London based architect practising from Parliament Street and Queen Street. In 1861 he was District Surveyor for Lambeth. Among his commissions were churches and chapels, a bank and a lunatic asylum.
