Queen's Road Cemetery was the original cemetery for the people of Croydon. In 1859, following the suggested closure of St John the Baptist (Croydon Parish Church) Churchyard, the Home Secretary approved the purchase of 22 acres of land for the purpose of burials. The design featured two mortuary chapels, each having a simple nave with open timbered roof, and the Episcopal chapel having the addition of a semi-octagonal apse at the east end. The chapels are no longer in use for burial services. Queen’s Road Cemetery opened in 1861. The war memorial seen here is just in front of the chapels - see also http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3033818
