H.M.P. Leicester is situated in Welford Road in the Southfields area of the city immediately north of Nelson Mandela Park (that was known as Welford Road Recreation Ground until 1991). A Mandela quotation in the park reads: "There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere". The prison was designed by William Parsons to resemble a castle and was opened in 1828. The gatehouse, including the adjoining buildings to north and south and the perimeter wall are Grade II listed structures.
