In 1821, George IV commissioned sculptures of a lion and a unicorn, beasts from royal coats of arms, to sit above gates in the wall to Kew Road. They were designed by Thomas Hardwicke and moulded in the artificial Coade stone. Information was taken from a Kew Gardens heritage web page.
