The campanile was built to disguise a chimney for the Palm House boilers. It was designed by Decimus Burton. Currently there are proposals to site mobile phone transmitters inside it. [Addition November 2011] The phone masts have not been installed yet, but following consultation with local residents Richmond Council gave permission, and RBG Kew are negotiating with a Telecoms supplier.
